IRUA
Initiation (irua) among the Kikuyu is an ancient tradition rooted in their origin stories of Gĩkũyũ and Mũmbi and their spiritual connection to Mount Kenya (Kĩrĩnyaga). It developed as a system to guide young people into adulthood and integrate them into the community.
Initiation marks the transition from childhood to adulthood, instills discipline, respect, and responsibility, creates identity through age groups (riika), and prepares individuals for roles in family and society.
